Smokey House - North Devon

Smokey House is a cob house that dates from around 1640 - although it may have been earlier no one really knows for certain.  Various suggestions for the origin of the name have been given however the most convincing would have been its former use as a smoking house for the curing of meat.  The owners Roy and Jacky have experienced strange smells, noises and sensations through the house throughout their 18 years of residence.  Members of Haunted Devon were requested to investigate.

Investigation Place:  Smokey House

Preliminaries

The team carried out a full EMF sweep of the building no significant readings were recorded.  After explaining to the owners what we hoped to achieve - Roy and Jacky gave us their own guidelines ie: areas off limits etc and then showed us around the house and grounds.  Infrared CCTV were placed in both the main bedroom and lower floor dining room with monitor located in the lower lounge. Temperature logger was placed in the Dining room together with an audible ambient thermometer. No significant draughts were noted and all windows were closed.

Team Byron - Gill - Dave - Brian (Jacky, Roy and Dan)

Moon State May 6, 2006 2:00 AM Name: Waxing Gibbous Percent of Full: 58% Age: 27% Rise: 1:22 PM Set: 3:38 AM

Main Bedroom The team witnessed several excellent light anomalies from the CCTV camera located in the main bedroom. The lights ran in all directions from the floor, ceiling and walls and at differing height and speed.  Byron suggested that we locked off an additional Night Vision Camcorder in the location and once complete and on Brian closing the door additional light anomalies were recorded.

Dining Room Several visitors to the house disliked the dining room and one had even left in tears and later apologised.  The team carried out some dowsing whilst working in the room - Dave insisted that there was another floor beneath the house and Jacky confirmed that previous owners had also suggested that a cellar existed although there was no evidence of this.

Gill also had some success with dowsing which seemed to verify that offered by Dave and Jacky. Brian spent some time in the dining room alone in a darkness vigil - but had nothing to report.  The team later carried out some glass divination within the dining room with some very good results with the team making contact with someone believed to be Vadir.  Roy the owner stated that some years back he had been requested to print  a piece of artwork that had been drawn by a medium as a spiritual guide for a client in a darkened room.  The piece had finally been hung within the house and Roy admitted that he had believed that the picture was in fact his own spirit guide and that Vadir had in fact been looking after the family. The movement was clear and pronounced and footage was taken that will be posted in this area shortly. Vadir when questioned stated that he died in the 19 C aged around 35 and of Danish origin (This sensed by Dave).

Landing Both Dave and Gill pick up on the name George on the landing independently.  Gill stated that here George was 6 years old and told her that her father worked at the house.  There is a George connected to the house who is also connected with a local Inn. Conclusion At least 7 spirit person's) are alleged to haunt this wonderful family home some in visitation others grounded.  The team sensed the house was "happy" and felt NO negative feeling within the house. The "orb" activity seemed to defy all explanation there were no draughts in the house.  The team fully appreciated that "dust" with Infra red can cause similar results however the speed, varying direction and height appeared to defy that explanation.  The glass divination was particularly interesting for all members of the team - Brian stating: "I have always thought that glass movement in such experiments was either the ideomotor effect or blatant trickery but last night gave me a great deal of cause to rethink this" An excellent evening - Our sincere thanks to Roy, Jacky and family for allowing us into their family home. Thank you!
